Food is love. Food is medicine. Food is life.

However we look at it, it’s everywhere and we really can’t live without it.

Food is a part of socialising and celebration. Birthdays, Christmas, weddings and festivals just wouldn’t be the same without food. Meals symbolise sharing and nurturing and passing on recipes helps us to learn about each other’s families and personal cultures.

Food is in song – ‘Rock Lobster’, ‘Hot Dog’, ‘Life on Mars’ and that brilliant 80’s romantic serenade ‘There’s a guy works down the chip shop swears he’s Elvis’. And it’s in movies ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’.

OK so there’s a couple dubiously in there but you get my drift. The words have meaning for us whether it’s the thought of living on another planet or contemplation of a life existing on chocolate (hopefully not!)

Food, films, music.

They all have the ability to lift the mood, calm us down, keep us focused and even leave us confused!

So food is fun. But we also need to take it seriously and make the right choices.

Our bodies love fresh ingredients – the purer the food, the better they can repair themselves, get good energy and be happy.

Children in particular are sponges for good food. Their growing bodies demand nutrients to be able to develop and survive. Different foods give us different nutrients, which then have different jobs.

  • Fish, nuts and seeds provide good fats which are needed everywhere but brilliantly oil the brain;
  • Red meat, poultry, fish, beans and tofu give us protein that gives energy and builds muscles;
  • B vitamins from vegetables, milk, eggs and rice give us energy
  • Calcium from green vegetables, beans, lentils and fish strengthens bones and teeth.

There are tons more and by varying our own and our kids diets our precious bodies will have a better chance of getting them!

So get the radio on, get cooking and get happy!
